California State University, Sacramento (CSUS), popularly known as Sacramento State, started operating as Sacramento State College in 1947. Initially, it held its classes at Sacramento Junior College with a batch of 235 students. The college moved to its current site in 1953. It became a full-fledged university and was given its current name in 1972. Today, the university holds the accreditation of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). It is affiliated to National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program and holds the membership of Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). It is also a member of the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) and the National Council of Graduate Schools.

Situated in the heart of Sacramento along the American river, the university campus is spread across 305 acres. In 2012, the campus won the designation of 'Tree Campus USA' for housing more than 3,500 trees. The campus features outstanding infrastructure and offers numerous first-rate facilities to students. Apart from academic facilities like a huge library, spacious classrooms, and numerous research centers, the campus also maintains excellent residential facilities. Dormitories with the capacity to house 1,700 students are located at the campus' north-eastern edge. The university is home to eight colleges that provide an array of graduate, undergraduate and doctoral programs in various disciplines of education like arts, communication, design, philosophy, business, engineering, computer science, nursing, tourism, criminology, sciences, economics, and anthropology. Over 30,000 students, including a large population of foreign students, enroll in the university annually.
