Established in 2005, the University of California, Merced is an open research university. It is known to be the tenth campus of the University of California. Also, it is the only university in the United States to have LEED-certified buildings within the premises. The university began its first class in 2005. In 2015, the university collaborated with UC Davis and UCLA. The plan for the development of the university was created in 1988 by UC Regents. Along with the planning of academic structure, the UC Merced Centre was also established near the university. It holds up to 70,000 journals, 9, 65,000 books and a variety of novels. Moreover, the library features a digital classroom and offers access to electronic sources. In addition, around 21,000 students accommodate at the campus. The housing facilities are known to be well-maintained and are organised by the resident assistants. Also, the campus comprises of three famous research institutes, Sierra Nevada Research Institute, Advanced Solar Technologies Institute, and the Health Sciences Research Institute. The university offers an undergraduate degree program and a postgraduate degree program.

The undergraduate courses are categorised into three schools, the School of Natural Sciences, School of Engineering, and the School of Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities. Presently, the School of Medicine is under-construction. The various subjects give students a wide scope to choose according to their field of interest.
